CHINGAY
The word Chingay is equivalent to the Mandarin word 妆艺 (zhuangyi) which means the art of costume and masquerade in the Hokkien dialect. The first Chingay Parade was held on 4th February 1973 as a street parade to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Over the years, it has evolved into an event that showcases the diverse and multicultural society in Singapore.
Chingay served as a compensation for the ban on firecrackers in Singapore. In traditional Chinese culture, firecrackers were used to ward off evil spirits. They were also a way of enhancing the festive atmosphere which explains the colourful and vibrant Chingay performances.
