FOR THE PEOPLE

BACKGROUND

  CHINGAY

The word Chingay is equivalent to the Mandarin word å¦†è‰º (zhuangyi) which means the art of costume and masquerade in the Hokkien dialect. The first Chingay Parade was held on 4th February 1973 as a street parade to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Over the years, it has evolved into an event that showcases the diverse and multicultural society in Singapore.

Chingay served as a compensation for the ban on firecrackers in Singapore. In traditional Chinese culture, firecrackers were used to ward off evil spirits. They were also a way of enhancing the festive atmosphere which explains the colourful and vibrant Chingay performances.
